1.horrible adj.令人毛骨悚然的，恐怖的：糟透的，极讨厌的
【记】词根记忆：horr(害怕)+ible--令人害怕的--恐怖的
【例】Ws such a horrible thing to tell a lie to them.
向他们撒谎真是件糟透的事。
【辨】horrible, awful, frightful三个词都有“可怕的，恐怖的”之意。horrible指由某种场景或行为引起的恐怖，有厌恶之感；awful来自于awe，表示含有敬畏的恐惧，如：an awful power; frightful程度比较深，多指丑陋的、让人突然感到的极度恐怖。

2.shiver   n./v.颤抖，发抖
【例】She was standing outside in the snow, shivering with cold.
她站在外面的大雪里，冻得直发抖。(2004)
【辨】shiver, shake二者都有“颤抖”的意思。shiver多指由于恐惧或寒冷而颤抖，多用于人；shake既可用于人也可用于物，是常用词，表示有较猛烈的冲击。

3.primitive  adj.原始的；粗糙的：纯朴的 n．原始人
【记】词根记忆：prim(第- )+itive(具…性质的)--第一时间的--原始的【例】There are many people whose cultures are undeveloped but the languages they speak are by no means primitive.

4.light  n．光线；灯火：（眼中的）闪光；眼光，见解 V．点燃，开始燃烧；照亮adj.轻的；少量的；轻快的，轻松的：光线充足的，明亮的：浅色的
【例】in the light of The government must make decision immediately in the light of the situation．
鉴于当前的形势，政府必须立即作出决定。
【用】make light of的意思是“轻视，视…为微不足道的”，
【派】lighter(n，打火机)；lightning(n．闪电adj.闪电式的)

5.access  n.（接近或进入某地的）方法，通路；（使用某物或接近某人的）机会或权利 vt．存取（计算机文件）
【记】词根记忆：ac(表加强)+cess(行走)--来去通畅--通路
【例】The modem communication industry influences the way people live in society and broadens their horizons by allowing access to information, education and entertainment.
现代通讯业为人们获取信息、接受教育和寻求娱乐提供了途径，也因此影响了他们在社会中的生活方式并开阔了他们的视野。( 2000)
【用】have access to是固定搭配，表示“有机会（或权利）接触，有机会（或权利）使用”，但需要注意的是for，with和in均不能与其搭配。

6.forge   vt.伪造，假冒；锤造；打制
【记】发音记忆：“仿制”--伪造，假冒
【例】It's easy to forge a signature on a cheque which prints a customer's name.
在印有顾客名字的支票上伪造签名不是件难事。

7.vain   adj.自负的，得意的；徒劳的，徒然的：空虚的，枉然的
【例】Mrs. Elton was a vain woman, extremely well satisfied with herself.
埃尔顿太太是个自视过高的女人，她对自己极为满意。
in vain    Rescuers battled in vain to save the whale stuck on a mud bank in the mouth of the Humber.
救援人员无力挽救搁浅在坎伯河口处泥岸上的鲸鱼。

8.comfort  n．安慰；舒适，安逸儿安慰；使…舒适
【记】联想记忆：com(表加强)+fort(堡垒)--堡垒给人以安全感--安慰
【例】Keeping a good mood can help us to deal with mistakes in the right way and find comfort in time of sorrow.
保持良好的情绪可以帮助我们用正确的方式处理错误，并且在难过时得到安慰。( 2003听力)
He usually tries many ways to comfort himself.
他总是想尽各种方法让自己舒适些。
