1.stagger  v.(使)摇晃,蹒跚而行;使摇摆,使震惊;间隔,错开
【例】He imagined that the war with Russia came about by his will, and the horrors that occurred did not stagger his soul.

The manager decided to stagger the employees’ annual holidays.

【例】We set to work with such zeal that we certainly merited success.

【辨】passion, fervor, zeal三者都有“热情”的意思。passion表示能压倒一切的热情和激情;fervor指感情的极度强烈;zeal强调对事业、理想或目标等的热爱。

【例】But now that the country has embarked on the return to democracy, Commonwealth heads of government have agreed to end the estrangement.

Joe started to embark on his studying scheme.

8.devour   vt.吞噬,耗尽;狼吞虎咽地吃(光);贪婪地看(听、读等);占据…的全部注意力
【记】词根记忆:de+vour(=vor,吃)--吞噬
【例】Edward devoured his lunch in the twinkling of an eye.
一眨眼的工夫爱德华就吃完了午餐。
Whitman was devoured by a terror that gnawed her body as well as her soul.
