1.stagger  v.（使）摇晃，蹒跚而行；使摇摆，使震惊；间隔，错开
【例】He imagined that the war with Russia came about by his will, and the horrors that occurred did not stagger his soul．
他想象着与俄罗斯的战争会如他所愿地打响，还想象着由此引发的恐惧不会震撼他的灵魂。
The manager decided to stagger the employees’ annual holidays.
经理决定错开员工的年假。

2.zeal  n.热心，热情
【例】We set to work with such zeal that we certainly merited success.
以如此高的热情来工作，我们理应取得成功。
【派】zealous( adj.热心的，热诚的)
【辨】passion, fervor, zeal三者都有“热情”的意思。passion表示能压倒一切的热情和激情；fervor指感情的极度强烈；zeal强调对事业、理想或目标等的热爱。

3.represent  v.代表：描绘，表现：象征，表示；意味着，相当于…
【例】They drew simple pictures or signs to represent things and ideas, and also to represent the sounds of their language.
他们画简单的图画或是符号来表示事物和想法以及他们语言的声音：(1998)
【派】representation（n．表现；象征，被表现之物；[pl.]申述，抗议）；representative（adj.典型的；代议政治的，代议制的n．典型；代表）

4.advantage  n.优势，益处，利益
【记】联想记忆：advant(看作advance，前进)+age(表行为)--前进，进步--优势
【例】take advantage of As my exams are coming next week, I’ll take advantage of the weekend to catch up on some reading.
下周就要考试了，我要利用这个周末来补习一下阅读。(2004) 
to one's advantage It is to your advantage to invest wisely.

5.embark  v．（使）上船（飞机等）：从事，着手；发动
【例】But now that the country has embarked on the return to democracy, Commonwealth heads of government have agreed to end the estrangement.
但既然这个国家已经着手恢复民主制，政府的联邦首脑已经同意结束疏远政策。（2001听力）
Joe started to embark on his studying scheme.
乔开始着手他的学习计划。
【用】embark常与in，on，upon连用，表示“开始，从事，着手”。

6.demonstrate  v．证明；示范；参加示威游行
【记】词根记忆: demonstr(显示)+i(做)--显示出来--示范
【例】We've already demonstrated the fact that we did not cheat during the examination.
我们已经证实了我们在考试中没有作弊。
【派】demonstration(n．论证；示范；示威游行)

7.toast   n．烤面包片，吐司：祝酒词，敬酒 V．烤，烘；使暖和；为…举杯祝酒
【记】发音记忆：“吐司”--烤面包片
【例】As soon as the singing was over, another and another toast was proposed.
歌声一结束，人们便一杯杯地开始祝酒。
He is toasting his hands in front of the fire.
他正坐在火炉前面暖手。

8.devour   vt．吞噬，耗尽；狼吞虎咽地吃（光）；贪婪地看（听、读等）；占据…的全部注意力
【记】词根记忆：de+vour(=vor，吃)--吞噬
【例】Edward devoured his lunch in the twinkling of an eye.
一眨眼的工夫爱德华就吃完了午餐。
Whitman was devoured by a terror that gnawed her body as well as her soul.
惠特曼内心充满了恐惧，这种感觉使她身心备受折磨。
【用】固定搭配be devoured by表示“充满（好奇、愤怒等）”。
