4.acquire v．取得，获得，习得：学到（知识等）

【例】The first two stages in the development of civilized man were probably the invention of weapons and the discovery of fire, akhough nobody knows exactly when he acquired the use of the latter.

【辨】acqulre,gain,obtain
这三个词都有“获得，占有，得到”的意思。acquire强调逐渐地、积少成多地去获得，对象是指最终得到的成果，如：Jane hasacquired a working knowledge of English.；gain指通过极大的努力或奋斗而获得，如：No gzuns without pains.；obtain是比较正式的用语，强调在得刭某物或达到目的时的计划性，如：He obtained the driving license.

5.permit n.执照，许可证 v.允许，许可
【记】词根记忆：per(表加强)+Init（送，放出）一允许放出一许可证
【例】No-Iead gasoline is the only one permitted in the city. and the rest of the cities follows.

【辨】permit, allow，let
三个词都有“允许”的意思。pennit比较正式，表主动地同意、许可，句型一般为permit sb. to do sth.，如：1 won't permit pets in the house.；allow有时可以与permit通用，但它相对比较消极，表不反对、不阻止；let最为口语化，有时含“难以阻止”的意思，如：Let him go.

6.designate vt.标出，指明；指派，任命 adj.已受委派（当选）而尚未就职的
【记】联想记忆：de+sign（记号；信号）+ate（使）一给出信号一指派
【例】The US has designated thirty international groups as terrorist organizations.ban-ing them from receiving money,weapons or other support from US citizens.

7.shelter n.庇护，保护，遮蔽；庇护物，避难所 v．躲避，避难
【例】When vou are in a survival situation and realize that shelter is a high priority，start looking for shelter as soon as possible.
当你需要求生并意识到找寻一个避难所是当务之急时就尽快找到它。
The famous star would be embarrassed to shelter from tax.
这位明星会为自己的避税行为感到难堪：

8.fetch v.取来，拿来：售得，卖得
【例】The chickens will become ready for the market when poultry will fetch the highest price. so that by the end of the year I shall have money enough from my share to buy a new gown.
家禽市场的价格达到顶峰时这些鸡就可以拿出去卖了，所以今年年底我将有足够的钱买一件新礼服
