1.squander V．浪费，挥霍
【例】The typical working man would collect Iiis wages on Friday evening and then, it was widely believed, having given his wife her“housekeeping”，would go out and squander the rest on beer and betting.

5.redeem  vt．赎回，挽回；挽救，恢复

【例】Tony redeemed himself by doing what he promised to do.

6.pledge  n．誓言，誓约；保证物，信物 vt.保证；抵押
【例】Tom asked me to accept this gift as a pledge of our friendship.
汤姆让我接受这个作为我们友谊象征的礼物。

7.block  n．大块；一排房屋，街区；障碍物 vt．阻塞，拦阻，封锁
【记】联想记忆：b+lock(锁)--家家户户都上锁的地方--街区
【例】A Pennsylvania Railroad worker had started a fire at a warehouse and the fire had spread several blocks, causing widespread damage.

8.react  v.反应：反抗，反对；起化学反应

Iron can react with water and air to produce rust.
铁与水和空气起化学反应后生锈。
【用】react表示“反应”的时候，常常与to连用，而表示“反抗，反对”的时候，要与against连用。
