1.parallel  n．平行线;纬线，纬度网；极相似且可相比的事物 adj.平行的；同类的，相似的
【记】词根记忆：para(类似)+llel--相似的；平行的
【例】A parallel is an imaginary line that represents a certain degree of latitude.
纬线是用来表明纬度高低的假想线条，

2.lack   n．缺乏，不足；缺少的东西 v.缺乏，没有
【例】for lack of Mr. Runt's project failed for lack of fund.
伦特先生的项目由于缺乏资金而失败了。（1999听力）
【用】lack常常出现在词组中，for lack of，by lack of，from lack of都表示“因缺乏…”的意思．be lacking是“不足，不够”的意思。

3.exclaim  v．（由于惊讶、痛苦、愤怒、高兴等）呼喊，惊叫，大声说
【记】词根记忆：ex(出)+claim(呼喊)--呼喊
【例】As soon as he jumped into the chilly water, Johnson started shivering and exclaiming.
詹森一跳到冰冷的水里，就开始哆嗦并叫喊起来。
【派】exclamation（n．呼喊，惊叫；感叹，惊叹；感叹词）
【辨】exclaim，proclaim二者是形近词。exclaim表示“呼喊，惊叫”；proclaim的意思是“宣布，声明”。

4.potential  n．潜在的可能，潜力 adj.潜在的，可能的
【记】词根记忆：pot(能力)+ent+ial--有能力的--潜力
【例】The Internet has the potential for good and bad. One can find well-organized, information-rich websites. At the same tune, one can also find wasteful websites.
互联网可能很好，也可能很糟糕。你可以找到布局精美、信息丰富的网站；同时也会登录一些毫无意义的网站。（2006听力）

5.analogy  n.相似，类似；类推，类比，比拟
【记】词根记忆：ana(根据)+log（比率）+y--类比
【例】You should get the argument based on a correct analogy.
你应该基于一个正确的类推来得出这个论点。

6.curse  n./v．诅咒，咒骂
【记】词根记忆：cur(跑)+se--跑到哪里都跟随--诅咒
【例】It is better to light one candle than curse the darkness.
点上一根蜡烛总好过咒骂黑暗。
【用】curse常用于书面语，特指“求神降灾祸给某人或某物”。
【派】cursed( adj.可憎的，可恶的，讨厌的)

7.overtake  vt.超（车）,超过;（不愉快的事）突然发生
【记】词根记忆：over(在…之上)+take(获得)--获得的速度在别人之上--超过
【例】In England, drivers usually overtake on the right of a car.
在英国，司机们常常从右边超车。

8.hence  adv.今后，从此；所以，因此
【例】The mortgage of your land was paid in full and hence you“bought the house”．
你已经全部付清了这块地的抵押贷款，因此可以说你已经“买下了这幢房子”。
