【例】The storm also paralyzed areas of Cuba where several people were killed and property and crops destroyed.

Certain plants have medicinal properties.
有些植物具有药用性能。
【用】property作“性质，属性”讲的用法不常见，要注意。

2.overflow   v．（使）溢出，（使）泛滥，涌出
【记】联想记忆：over+flow(流)--溢出
【例】Heavy rains and overflowing rivers have caused extensive flooding in some parts of the U.S. Midwest and in Eastern regions of the U.S. as well.
大雨和泛滥的河水给美国中西部的一些地区以及东部带来了大片的洪水。（1998听力）

3.smash  v.（使）破碎，粉碎，打碎：猛撞，猛冲，猛击，痛击；打败．打破（记录等）
【例】All my illusions about work were smashed after graduation.
毕业后，我所有关于工作的幻想都破灭了。
【辨】burst, crush, smash三个词都有“破碎”的意思。burst一般是由于内部压力而猛然破裂；crush多为外部巨大的压力造成物体变形或碎掉，如：Eggs crush easily; smash强调太过大力而使某物完全成为碎片。

4.filter  v．过滤，滤除：（使）漏出；透过：（消息等）泄露 n．过滤器，过滤装置；滤光器，滤色镜
【记】词根记忆：fil(线条)+ter--变成一条条单色光线--滤光器
【例】The news may filtered through a row of channels supervised by safe guards.
这些消息可能是透过保安监管的一系列渠道传播开的。
【辨】filter，seep，filter揩液体或气体渗透、穿过某些物质，如纸张、布等；seep表示从小口里慢慢渗出，强调缓慢地、间歇性地渗出，如：Gas seeped into the room.

5.arrest   vt.逮捕，拘留：抓住，吸引；阻止，阻碍，抑制 n.逮捕，拘留：阻止

【例】Nothing can arrest the spread of the disease.

6.brink   n．（峭壁、河流等的）边沿，边;（死亡、战争等的）边缘

【例】Despite his misfortunes, his faith and optimism remained intact.

8.formalize   vt．使形式化
【记】联想记忆：form(形状)+al+ize（使）--使成形--使形式化
【例】As I say, you wanted to formalize me, to make me over into one of your own class, with your class-ideals, class-values, and class-prejudices.
